Fashion Revolution New Zealand has announced the return of Fabric Forward: Upcycle Design Challenge, a nationwide competition inviting people across Aotearoa to creatively transform damaged and discarded clothing into wearable new designs.

Whether you’re a hobby sewist, a DIY creative, aspiring designer, or simply passionate about reducing textile waste, this is your chance to reimagine fashion and inspire others to do the same.

The challenge aims to spotlight the urgent issue of textile overconsumption and waste in Aotearoa while celebrating creative thinking, resourcefulness, and sustainable style.

“We’re excited to bring the challenge back to everyday New Zealanders this year. It’s a chance to get involved and be creative while reducing waste, no matter your experience level,” says Amanda Butterworth, country coordinator for Fashion Revolution NZ.

Fabric Forward challenges entrants to transform damaged, worn-out, unsellable, unwearable, or discarded garments into unique fashion pieces, reimagining what’s possible when we shift our mindset from waste to resource.

How it works

Participants can enter one of two categories: Garment or Accessory, with entries judged on wearability, originality & creativity, craftsmanship & execution, transformation & innovation, alignment with sustainability values, and waste diversion impact. The challenge is open to all ages and skill levels, with no entry fee.

Entrants must upcycle worn-out, damaged, or discarded garments or textiles into ready-to-wear items, either clothing or accessories. This is not a wearable art competition; finished pieces should be functional and wearable in everyday modern life.

All entries must include before-and-after photos, a materials list, and a short written description outlining the inspiration and techniques used.
