Globally you’d be hard-pressed to find another clothing label as clean as Kowtow.
Clean lines define the clothes; clean practices define everything behind them – from fibre to footprint, with nothing swept under the hem.
Head designer Dayne Johnston and the team are guided by a framework that is uncompromising in its commitment to ecological sustainability, ethical production and considered design and the release of Kowtow’s AW26 collection is news worth reporting because it’s desirable as well as meaningful. Covetable yet considered, and offers a grounded palette that anchors not only the collection, but the wearer. Every detail is intentional, every decision shaped by the belief that clothing should be made beautifully – and responsibly.
The collection is titled The Ground Beneath which Johnston explains is a hands-on exploration of nature, making and materiality – grounded in the landscapes, materials and processes that guides Kowtow’s design.
It is also an ode to the countless skilled hands that bring each Kowtow garment to life. From the hands that pick the cotton, to those that pin fabric on the mannequin, to those who fold and tie the garments – this season honours the artistry that exists in every step of the journey.
The design story takes shape through a hands-on exploration of nature, making and materiality.
Guided by an artisanal mindset, it champions single-fibre, plastic free design while celebrating making in its purest form.
Key fabrics for the season include a misty floral, landscape check, brushstroke and brown denim.
The floral is a digital print on voile, inspired by traditional Ikat weaving.
The landscape check which plays with scale and texture to echo shifting horizons.
The brushstroke print – which started as hand-painted strokes on paper – is reminiscent of pine needles and forest silhouettes in texture, and brown denim inspired by the colour of potting soil.
Stripes are also enlarged beyond expectation.
A palette inspired by natural dyes and colours the planet produces – soils, foliage, minerals – to Kowtow’s signature colour pops of nasturtium orange.
